BENEFITS

The power of Endurolytes Extreme – in a drink powder

Endurolytes Extreme Powder is our most popular high-strength electrolyte replacement, Endurolytes Extreme, in powder form. It dissolves quickly and completely and has a mild, natural watermelon flavour: sip it on its own in water, or mix it into the sports drink you use for multi-hour sessions – exactly as much as you need.

Thanks to its mild flavour, it's easy to drink all day long, and because it leaves no residue, it's ideal for hydration pack reservoirs and any kind of bottle. Each scoop provides about three times as much sodium and potassium as a classic Endurolytes capsule, and it tastes milder than Endurolytes Fizz.

  • Per scoop: 120 mg sodium, 72 mg chloride and 75 mg potassium, plus 40 mg calcium, 20 mg magnesium and 0.5 mg manganese.
  • Full spectrum: not just salt – highly soluble calcium and magnesium lactate gluconate, potassium citrate and manganese gluconate.
  • Flexible dosing: adjust the strength of your drink to the heat, your workload and how much you sweat.
  • Clean formula: vegan, gluten-free, kosher; no added sugar or caffeine, lightly sweetened with monk fruit.

Magnesium and calcium contribute to normal muscle function, and magnesium also contributes to electrolyte balance; potassium contributes to normal muscle function and to normal functioning of the nervous system; chloride contributes to normal digestion by production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

Who is it for?

Anyone with high electrolyte needs – in scorching heat, high humidity or when sweating heavily – anyone who doesn't like swallowing capsules, and anyone who mixes their energy and electrolytes into a single bottle for multi-hour training sessions or races. It barely changes the flavour of HEED, Perpetuem or Recoverite. Read more: The life and death of electrolytes – or why salt alone isn't enough.

ENDUROLYTES EXTREME POWDER FAQS

What is the difference between Endurolytes, Endurolytes Extreme and Endurolytes Extreme Powder?

Endurolytes is the original electrolyte replacement: a balanced blend of sodium chloride (salt), calcium, magnesium, potassium and manganese. It's ideal if you follow a diet that's moderate in salt.

Endurolytes Extreme provides roughly three times as much salt and potassium per capsule as one Endurolytes capsule – and Endurolytes Extreme Powder delivers the same stronger formula as a drink powder (in sodium and potassium, 1 scoop ≈ 1 capsule). The Extreme versions are the better choice if:

  1. You're racing in unusually hot conditions (Kona or Badwater, for example): you can cover exceptionally high electrolyte needs with fewer capsules or scoops of powder.
  2. You're not yet acclimatised to the heat: slow down, cut your calorie intake slightly and deliberately increase your fluid and electrolyte intake – Extreme helps with the latter.
  3. Your diet is salty: we recommend 1500–2300 mg of sodium (3.75–5.75 g of salt) a day. The saltier you eat, the more sodium you lose during exercise. If you switch to a less salty diet, Extreme helps you through the first few weeks; after that you can go back to Endurolytes.
  4. You're prone to cramping, or you sweat very heavily: some athletes need 6 or more Endurolytes capsules an hour even in mild weather – for them, Extreme is the more convenient solution.
  5. You're just starting the season: until you're in shape, you lose more sodium, chloride and potassium. As your fitness improves, you can go back to Endurolytes.

How does Endurolytes Extreme Powder differ from Endurolytes Extreme capsules?

The two products are used the same way, with a few differences:

  1. Different mineral forms: the powder contains calcium and magnesium lactate gluconate, sodium chloride, potassium citrate and manganese gluconate. These forms dissolve in water better than the amino acid chelates used in the capsules.
  2. Anti-caking agent: the powder contains silicon dioxide (Flo-Gard™ SP) so it doesn't clump and stays easy to measure.
  3. Mild flavour: the powder is lightly sweetened with monk fruit extract and has a natural watermelon flavour. You can drink it on its own in water, it's ideal for a hydration pack reservoir, and it makes HEED, Perpetuem or Recoverite only slightly saltier.

How do I measure out a serving?

There's a scoop in the container: 1 level scoop (3 cm³, about 2 g) = 1 serving. If you don't have it to hand, 1 level teaspoon is roughly the same amount.

Is the flavour mild? Is it fizzy?

The flavour is mild: the natural watermelon flavour is very subtle, so you'll barely notice it in Perpetuem or other Hammer fuels. It isn't carbonated – unlike Endurolytes Fizz, it doesn't fizz when you mix it with water.

Does it dissolve completely?

Yes. The powder is micronised, so it dissolves quickly and completely, with no residue – in a bottle or in a hydration pack reservoir.

Why do I need electrolytes?

Electrolytes are like the oil in your car's engine: they don't power the engine, but without them it won't run smoothly. They play a part in muscle contraction, the transmission of nerve impulses and the maintenance of fluid balance – magnesium and calcium, for example, contribute to normal muscle function.

Just as you wouldn't wait until the engine has seized to top up the oil, don't wait for cramps before you replace electrolytes: by the time you cramp, your performance started to decline long before. The goal is steady, consistent replenishment.

Why is Endurolytes Extreme Powder better than a simple salt tablet?

Many athletes focus only on salt (sodium chloride), yet your body needs the full spectrum of electrolytes: besides sodium and chloride, it also needs calcium, magnesium, potassium and manganese – continuously and in balanced proportions.

If you take in too much salt (from salty food, salt tablets or products with excessive sodium content), your body detects the external supply: the hormone aldosterone “shuts down” sodium recycling in the kidneys, so your body excretes even more sodium. Meanwhile another hormone, vasopressin, comes to the fore, which can cause uncomfortable water retention and swelling.

Optimal electrolyte replenishment during endurance exercise is gradual and steady, covers ALL electrolytes, and doesn't upset your body's own regulation. That's what Endurolytes, Endurolytes Fizz, Endurolytes Extreme and Endurolytes Extreme Powder are made for.

What do you think about sweat test results?

Question: I had a sweat test, which says I need at least 1000 mg of sodium per hour. What's your opinion?

Answer: It can give you interesting data, but we're not fans, because it shows only a small slice of the whole picture. The test typically measures fluid and salt loss for about an hour under controlled conditions – that may be accurate for the first hour, but not for what happens in the hours that follow.

In the first 30–60 minutes of exercise you really do lose a lot of fluid and salt. Your body detects this, however: the hormone aldosterone recycles some of the sodium via the kidneys, so the loss doesn't stay the same hour after hour. On top of that, your body already holds several tens of grams of sodium.

The common mistake: based on the test, someone replaces 1–2 g of sodium per hour – that's 2.5–5 g of salt, which is a lot. Excessive sodium intake switches off aldosterone regulation, your body excretes even more sodium, and vasopressin can lead to water retention, oedema and raised blood pressure. If your hands, ankles or face are swollen at the end of a long training session or race, or your clothes are heavily caked with salt, you've probably taken in too much salt.

Bottom line: don't try to replace the full loss measured by the sweat test every hour – moderate, steady, full-spectrum replenishment is the way to go.

Do I need Endurolytes with Perpetuem?

Yes. The minerals in Perpetuem come only from the natural mineral content of its ingredients; it has no purpose-built electrolyte blend like HEED does. So treat Perpetuem as an “energy-only” fuel and replace your electrolytes separately with an Endurolytes product – for example, with a scoop of Endurolytes Extreme Powder mixed straight into your Perpetuem drink.

Can I take it together with Anti-Fatigue Caps?

Yes. All Endurolytes products combine well with Anti-Fatigue Caps and the other Hammer Nutrition products.

Do any Endurolytes products contain caffeine?

Only the Cola flavour of Endurolytes Fizz: it contains 20 mg of caffeine per tablet. Endurolytes, Endurolytes Extreme, Endurolytes Extreme Powder and the other Fizz flavours are caffeine-free.

Does it contain citric acid?

Endurolytes Extreme Powder contains potassium citrate, i.e. potassium bound to citric acid – a highly soluble form with a high elemental potassium content. Only Endurolytes Fizz contains added citric acid (the minimal amount needed for the fizz); Endurolytes capsules contain no citric acid.

Do Endurolytes products contain allergens?

Endurolytes products are made in a facility free of tree nuts and allergens, and every production batch is tested by an independent laboratory for purity and consistency. All Endurolytes products are gluten-free; Endurolytes Extreme Powder is vegan and kosher. The anti-caking agent silicon dioxide (Flo-Gard™ SP) is non-GMO, is not derived from plant, animal, petroleum or fermentation sources, and is kosher certified.

How much manganese is in Hammer products?

We believe athletes need somewhat more manganese than non-athletes: manganese takes part in the energy-producing enzyme reactions of muscle cells and contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress (it is a component of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase). Your body uses it up during exercise and also loses it through sweat, and only a small part (about 3–5%) of orally ingested manganese is absorbed.

Manganese content of Hammer products:

  • Endurolytes – 0.25 mg per capsule
  • Endurolytes Fizz – 3.0 mg per tablet
  • Endurolytes Extreme – 0.5 mg per capsule
  • Endurolytes Extreme Powder – 0.5 mg per scoop
  • HEED – 2.0 mg per scoop
  • Recoverite – 2.9 mg per serving (2 scoops)
  • Vegan Recoverite – 0.6 mg per serving (2 scoops)
  • Premium Insurance Caps – 1.07 mg per capsule
HOW TO USE

Use it during exercise, especially if:

  • your session lasts longer than 2 hours – regardless of temperature and humidity;
  • your session is shorter, but it's above 27 °C and/or the humidity is over 70%;
  • the temperature and humidity are well above what you're used to (around 5–6 °C warmer).

Dosage

  • During exercise: mix 1 scoop in 475–830 ml of water and drink it every hour.
  • In extreme conditions you may need a higher dose.
  • Mixed into a sports drink: in a multi-hour bottle of Perpetuem or HEED, add as many scoops as the number of hours the bottle is meant to last.
  • 1 level scoop (3 cm³) is about 1 teaspoon.

Good to know

  • The sodium and potassium content of 1 scoop roughly equals 1 Endurolytes Extreme capsule, or about 3 Endurolytes capsules.
  • Your electrolyte needs are also affected by your body weight, fitness, the weather, acclimatisation and individual factors – try it out in different conditions to find out how much you need.
  • Don't take in too much salt: excessive sodium intake can cause water retention, swelling and stomach upset (see the sweat test question in the FAQs).
  • Endurolytes Extreme Powder does not protect you from heatstroke, hyponatraemia or the other dangers of intense exercise in the heat.

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

Full-spectrum electrolyte profile with increased sodium, chloride and potassium:

  • Sodium – from salt (sodium chloride), which is about 40% sodium.
  • Chloride – also from salt, which is about 60% chloride. Contributes to normal digestion by production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
  • Potassium (potassium citrate) – a potassium source bound to citric acid, with excellent solubility in water. Contributes to normal muscle function and to normal functioning of the nervous system.
  • Calcium (calcium lactate gluconate) – a compound of calcium, lactic acid and gluconic acid; we use it for its neutral taste and excellent solubility. Calcium contributes to normal muscle function and to normal neurotransmission.
  • Magnesium (magnesium lactate gluconate) – likewise a mild-tasting, highly soluble form. Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance, to normal muscle function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
  • Manganese (manganese gluconate) – a trace element that contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Silicon dioxide (Flo-Gard™ SP) – an anti-caking agent that adds no calories and is non-GMO and allergen-free.

Monk fruit extract (Siraitia grosvenorii) – a natural, calorie-free sweetener: its sweetness comes not from sugars but from compounds in the fruit called mogrosides.

Maltodextrin – a carrier, providing about 1 g of carbohydrate per serving.
