BENEFITS

Fuel for a 100 km ultra run – in one kit

The 100K Ultra Running Kit brings together the products we think you’ll need in a 100 km race: long-lasting energy, gels for the faster sections, solid food, electrolytes and a recovery drink once you cross the finish line – at a better price than buying them separately. You choose the flavours of the Perpetuem, the Hammer Gel and the Hammer Bar.

What’s in the kit?

  • 4 × Perpetuem (single-serving packet, flavour of your choice): the core fuel of ultrarunning – complex carbohydrates, soy protein and a small amount of fat, 180 kcal per serving. During long efforts, your body covers a small part of its energy needs from protein, which is why we recommend it as your primary fuel source in races longer than 3 hours.
  • 4 × Hammer Gel (single-serving pouch, flavour of your choice): maltodextrin-based energy gel, 90 kcal per serving (100 kcal for the Nocciola and Peanut Butter flavours), with no added refined sugar.
  • 2 × HEED (single-serving packet, Lemon-Lime): electrolyte sports drink powder, 110 kcal per serving, with no added sugar.
  • 2 × Hammer Bar (50 g, flavour of your choice): organic energy bar made from real food – a light breakfast before the start, or solid food for the calmer sections.
  • 4 × Endurolytes sample pack (4 capsules per pack): 16 capsules in total of full-spectrum electrolyte replacement.
  • 1 × Endurolytes Fizz (13 effervescent tablets, Grapefruit): electrolytes for your bottle – one tablet is roughly equivalent to 2 Endurolytes capsules.
  • 1 × Recoverite (single-serving packet, Orange): recovery drink with complex carbohydrates and whey protein, for after the finish.
  • 1 × Hammer Flask: 5-serving gel flask – you can carry your gels together and take them sip by sip.

What we had in mind when putting it together

  • Steady energy for many hours: Perpetuem is the basis of your fueling, the gel is for the faster sections and the final push, and the Hammer Bar is good when you feel like solid food.
  • Easy on your stomach: stomach problems are the most common issue in ultrarunning. In our experience, the main cause is too much and too concentrated fuel, so we recommend a moderate calorie intake – 120–180 kcal per hour for most athletes – and you drink your fluids separately, as plain water.
  • Electrolytes all the way: together, the 16 Endurolytes capsules and the 13 Fizz tablets provide lasting, steady replacement. Magnesium and calcium contribute to normal muscle function.
  • No added refined sugar: most of the energy comes from complex carbohydrates. HEED is made with no added sugar and Hammer Gel with no added refined sugar.

In total, the kit provides about 1700 kcal – at 120–180 kcal per hour, that’s roughly 10–12 hours of fueling. If you’ll be out on the course longer, or you won’t eat anything else at the aid stations, top it up with more Perpetuem – write to us and we’ll help you put it together.

FAQ

How do I choose the flavours?

On the product page, you can choose the flavours of the Hammer Gel, the Hammer Bar and the Perpetuem before adding the kit to your cart. The 4 gels, the 2 bars and the 4 Perpetuem servings each come in one flavour; the HEED is Lemon-Lime, the Recoverite Orange and the Fizz Grapefruit.

Is the kit enough for a 100 km race?

The kit provides about 1700 kcal – at 120–180 kcal per hour, that’s roughly 10–12 hours of fueling. If you’ll be out on the course longer, or you won’t eat anything else at the aid stations, bring more Perpetuem – write to us and we’ll help you work out how much you need.

Why is Perpetuem the basis, and not the gel?

Because in efforts longer than 3 hours, your body covers a small part of its energy needs from protein, and if you don’t supply it, your body starts breaking down its own muscle tissue. Alongside complex carbohydrates, Perpetuem also contains soy protein and a small amount of fat, which is why we recommend it as your primary fuel source over long distances. The gel provides energy your body can use more quickly – a good addition for the faster sections and the final push.

How do I prepare Perpetuem?

One serving lasts one hour, mixed with water. If you don’t want to stop and mix every hour, you can mix several servings in one bottle as a concentrate and take it sip by sip, drinking plain water alongside it. In warm weather, prepare your multi-hour bottle the night before and freeze it.

What is the Hammer Flask for?

The gel flask holds 5 servings of Hammer Gel. You can fill it with the gels from the kit, so you don’t have to fiddle with pouches, and you can take your gel sip by sip – if you later buy gel in a larger pack, you can refill it from that too.

Does Endurolytes help with cramps?

Yes, that’s one of the things it’s for. A lack of the electrolytes lost through sweat is one of the common causes of cramps in long races, and Endurolytes replaces exactly these – sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium – in balanced proportions. Magnesium and calcium contribute to normal muscle function.

It’s important to know that cramps can have several causes: fatigue, an unusually fast pace, heat, and too little or even too much fluid can all play a role, so no single product is a 100% solution. The best thing you can do is not to wait for cramps: take your first dose before the start, then replace electrolytes steadily every hour. If you’re prone to cramping, run in very hot weather or sweat heavily, Endurolytes Extreme may be the better choice.

When should I drink Recoverite?

Within 30 minutes of crossing the finish line. That’s when conditions are most favourable for your body to refill its glycogen stores; Recoverite provides complex carbohydrates and whey protein for this.

Are Hammer Nutrition products tested by an independent laboratory?

Yes. Our products are manufactured in accordance with US manufacturing regulations (21 CFR 111): every raw material used is tested for purity, potency, identity and integrity, and they are checked at every stage of production before they go on sale.

HOW TO USE

Before the race

  • Finish your last light meal at least 3 hours before the start – a Hammer Bar is a good choice for this. After that, drink only water.
  • 15–30 minutes before the start: 2 Endurolytes capsules.
  • 5–10 minutes before the start: 1 Hammer Gel.

During the race

  • Energy: about 120–180 kcal per hour. Perpetuem is the basis: one serving (180 kcal) lasts one hour, but you can mix several hours’ worth in one bottle and take it sip by sip. Use Hammer Gel alongside Perpetuem, on the faster sections and in the final push; if you feel like solid food, eat the second Hammer Bar.
  • Electrolytes: 1–3 Endurolytes capsules per hour, or one Fizz tablet in the water in your bottle; in the heat or if you sweat heavily, you may need more (1–6 capsules per hour for most athletes). Perpetuem and HEED also contain electrolytes.
  • Fluids: about 0.5–0.75 litres per hour, up to 0.8 litres in hot weather. Save the HEED for the warmer sections.

After the finish

  • Drink the Recoverite within 30 minutes. Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass.

Try the servings and flavours in a long training session first, not on race day. Detailed plans: How to Fuel: 50K Run and 8-Hour Protocol.

Good to know

  • Caffeine: the Espresso (50 mg) and Tropical (25 mg) Hammer Gel and the Caffe Latte Perpetuem (30 mg) contain caffeine: not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women. Save the caffeinated flavours for the second half of the race.
  • Allergens: Perpetuem contains soy, and Recoverite contains milk (whey protein); the Hammer Bar contains almonds or cashews, and the Oatmeal Apple flavour contains oats; the Peanut Butter Hammer Gel flavours contain peanuts, and Nocciola contains hazelnuts and milk. Some of the products are made in facilities that also process other allergens – you’ll find the details on the product pages.
  • HEED and Recoverite contain xylitol – do not give them to your dog.
  • If you have high blood pressure, kidney or heart disease, or follow a low-sodium diet, consult your doctor about electrolyte replacement.
